“There is no perception without memory. […] a work of art is always half a person. Therefore, experiencing art is interpersonal and intersubjective.”
Siri Hustvedt wrote this about Louise Bourgeois, the artist who worked particularly prominently on motherhood and placed her big and little “mamas” in the art world. For a long time, motherhood was not a topic worthy of art, the male-dominated salons and academies left room for romantic depictions at best. Today there are numerous female artists who see and accept motherhood as an inspiration and motivation for works of art.
Based on concrete works of art, the philosopher Wang Ge and the art historian Nora Wölfing will talk about motherhood in art. A whole range of artists from China and the Chinese-speaking diaspora articulate thoughts and stories about motherhood, daughterhood and the transgenrational transmission of knowledge. Political and patriarchal attributions and borders are shown in the works of art, broken open and open up for new images, new ways and possibilities to understand motherhood in today's society in a feminist way.
