September 24th at 7PM
Chinese poet Yang Lian lyrically explores current global issues such as Hong Kong, the pandemic, and Russia's attack on Ukraine in his latest book of poems, "Exploring Evil," published in German. In these poems, the crises of our time, reflection and poetry flow into one another, with the human dimension always at the center.
Yang's "Exploration of Evil" is unique in that it has been translated by a large number of German-speaking poets and translators, including Joachim Sartorius, Jan Wagner, Ann Cotten, Dieter M. Gräf, and Hans Christoph Buch. They continue the tradition of mutual exchange between Chinese and German poets that has accompanied Yang Lian for many years, and thus cultivate a common poetic reflection between the languages. The different approaches and translation styles of translators such as Rupprecht Mayer, Daniel Bayerstorfer, and Lea Schneider lend Yang Lian's poems rich and varied vocal colors.
The poems will be brought to life in conversation between Yang Lian and Jan Wagner. Introduction and moderation will be provided by Jan Wagner. A literary evening of exploration of evil through poetry.
In English, Chinese and German.
