YoYo (Liu Youhong) is a fiction writer, painter, and guest professor at Shantou University in Guangdong Province, China. Born in Western China, she worked as an arts editor at the Chinese Theater Publishing House before leaving China in 1988. After moving abroad, she began writing literature and has since published nine collections of novelettes and one novel in China, Taiwan, and other international locations. Two of her works have been translated into English: "Ghost Tide," which was published by Fourth Estate, part of HarperCollins, in 2005 and was heralded as “true literature” by the well-known Australian writer Nicolas Jose, and "One Man’s Decision to Become a Tree," which was published by PalmArtPress in Berlin, Germany, in 2023. YoYo has witnessed the entire history of contemporary Chinese literature since the early 1980s, and her elegant and experimental works draw inspiration from the vibrant and complex reality of Chinese life. She is also a self-educated artist whose paintings have been exhibited in many countries and collected by numerous institutions and individuals. In 2018, she won the special prize for foreign artists at the 46th International Art Exhibition in Sulmona, Italy. YoYo has been invited to various literary and arts foundations, such as Berlin DAAD, Yaddo (USA), and Schloss Solitude (Germany). She has taught at Eton College in Windsor, the School of Oriental and African Studies at the University of London, the University of Sydney, and in Auckland, New Zealand. Currently, she divides her time between Berlin and London, working as a freelance artist.
