Dr Đăng Lãnh Hoàng was born in Vietnam in 1948. After completing a degree in chemistry, he went on to earn a doctorate in the subject. From 1988 to 1991, he worked as a research assistant at the Central Institute for Physical Chemistry of the East German Academy of Sciences in Berlin. From 1992 to 2014, he held the same position at the Institute of Applied Chemistry in Berlin-Adlershof and the Leibniz Institute for Catalysis at Rostock University. Since retiring, he has written short stories, including the autobiographical book Mauerfälle – Geschichten eines vietnamesischen Berliners (The Fall of the Wall – Stories of a Vietnamese Berliner), published in 2021. However, he is best known as a translator of literary texts, having translated works such as In Zeiten des abnehmenden Lichts (Hanoi, 2016) and Metropol (Hanoi, 2022) by Eugen Ruge, Deutschstunde (Hanoi, 2019) by Siegfried Lenz, and others from German into Vietnamese. Dr Hoang also contributed to the translation of the book Vietnam: Mythen und Wirklichkeiten by Jörg Wischermann and Gerhard Will (Bonn, 2021). He also translates works from Vietnamese into German, including Das große Los by Vu Trong Phung (Tauland-Verlag, 2021). Dr Hoang is highly regarded in the translation industry and received the ‘Translator of the Year’ award in Vietnam in 2018.
