Sung-Uk Brad Hwang, born in 1966 in Seoul, South Korea, studied art at the University of California, where he studied under the tutelage of Charles Ray, Chris Burden, and Paul McCarthy. He also studied sculpture in Baltimore with Sal Scarpitta. The artist and sculptor uses everyday objects and diverse materials as a medium for his art, transforming them into mechanical sculptures and installations. Hwang's artworks are meant to encourage participation, promoting encounters and playful interaction. Since 1991, Hwang's center of life has been in Berlin, where he lives with his wife and two daughters on a houseboat on the Spree River.
