Bela (they/them), based in Seoul and Berlin, is an innovative performance talent and musician deeply rooted in Korean folk music and club culture. Her work blurs traditional boundaries and explores queerness and misunderstanding through her unique position as an unappreciated voice in Korean narratives. Remarkably, Bela transforms traditional Nongak music into an infectious club music experience, bending conventional rhythmic patterns to create a sound that is both alien and rooted in tradition.
bela's signature sound is manifested in her meticulously composed electronic tracks, where each track is a direct reflection of her emotional reality. Her work includes the publications Guidelines, 2020 and why are you so lost sweetie. Specifically, the EPGuidelines experiments with pungmul, a genre of Korean traditional music, creating a unique club sound that challenges native percussion sounds.
Bela has been recognized at platforms such as CTM Festival, Unsound Festival Kraków, Rewire Festival and participated in the citywide exhibition Out of Scale: transmediale in Berlin. They also co-direct the Sorrow Club, a series of events promoting music and performance by global women artists.
