For a German artist, is learning a Vietnamese cultural technique already 'encroaching cultural appropriation' or appreciation that serves her understanding? Does an increasingly global world of mutual rapprochement present us with an ambivalence that we have to face more and more often? Do we understand each other correctly? Using the example of the "Red River" - a lacquer work created in Hanoi in 1993 - cultural scientist Luu Bich Ngoc and artist Veronika Radulovic explore these questions in an open studio discussion and also provide further information on the "natural lacquer" - its genesis as a panel painting and national significance.
