"Über Leben" is a graphic novel dedicated to the challenges of urban life and in particular the increasing gentrification in Berlin. In a whimsical, whimsical crime story, we accompany protagonist Maki-Maus and cat Adagio as they grapple with existential challenges and try to find their place in a world where open spaces are becoming increasingly rare. Through the journey of these characters, author Maki Shimizu brings to the fore issues that are often overlooked in public discourse.

Critics praise " Über Leben" for its courageous portrayal of heavy themes, while also appreciating the way Shimizu manages to tell her story with a certain lightness and humor. WDR 3 describes it as a "personal life story superbly combined with a milieu study," while rbbKultur calls it a "radically subjective urban stream of consciousness of the 21st century." In 2022, "Über Leben" received the International Creative Media Award in silver.
