Israeli-Berlin author Tomer Gardi will read from his novel “Liefern,” published in February 2026. He conducted on-site research for the novel over three years in six cities.
They're everywhere, we see them every day. Whether in Delhi, Tel Aviv, Buenos Aires, Istanbul, or Berlin, they're buzzing through the cities: food delivery workers. Tomer Gardi weaves their stories into a global contemporary epic. "Liefern" tells a story of racism and exploitation, of love, family, and the deep longing for connection. It's been a long time since a German novel felt this present, this international, this political, and this light on its feet all at once. The novel was created in collaboration with Anne Birkenhauer, who also translated the 'Mimesis' section from Hebrew.
Filmon, who fled from Eritrea to Tel Aviv, works as a delivery man. He wants to save enough money in order to bring his wife and daughter to Berlin. His job is always at risk, he doesn’t have a work permit, and he works under a false name. His wife and daughter are learning German with Nina at the education center, who travels to Delhi for a semester abroad, where she falls in love with the Argentine Ramón. The narrator goes to Istanbul to blow the prize money from a literary award he scammed. And in Buenos Aires, Ramón’s mother has to cope with her son’s absence. "Liefern" is a literary journey around the world in six episodes and a celebration of storytelling, done in Tomer Gardi’s unique style: deep and humorous, with political awareness and literary flair.
