How many years of your life would you sacrifice so that your loved ones could experience freedom? In “People Like Us,” Thị Thanh Thảo Trần tells the story from the perspective of the daughter of a Vietnamese immigrant family in Germany. She writes about the challenges faced by family members in the GDR and reunified Germany, exposing the wounds caused by migration and experiences of racism.
The reading will be moderated by Berlin-based author Khuê Phạm. The political scientist, author and journalist focuses on post-migrant German society.
Thị Thanh Thảo Trần was born in Vietnam in 1986 and has lived in Berlin since 1999. She studied cultural studies as well as comparative literature and art studies. “People Like Us” is her first novel; in 2022, her short story collection “Where I Come From” was already shortlisted for the 2022 Young Storyteller Award.
